Meet The Team

Dr. Bradley J. Strawser is Founder and CEO at Compass. BJ is Department Chair and Professor of Philosophy at the US Naval Postgraduate School; formerly a Research Associate at Oxford University’s Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict Center, and a Resident Research Fellow at the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership.

Founder & President

Dr. David Whetham is Founder and President at Compass. David is Professor of Ethics in the Defence Studies Department of King’s College London, based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College at the UK Defence Academy. David advises senior leaders across the military and corporate worlds on the ethical application of their organizational missions.

Lisa Strutz is Founder and COO at Compass, where she oversees business operations and project management. Lisa is a cross-sectoral management consultant and entrepreneur.

Dr. Ted Lechterman is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at IE University, where he holds the UNESCO Chair in AI Ethics and Governance. Ted is a former Research Fellow at Oxford University’s Institute for Ethics in AI. He was educated at Harvard and Princeton and completed postdoctoral fellowships at Stanford, Goethe University, and the Hertie School.

Dr. Ryan Jenkins is a Professor of Philosophy and Associate Director at the Ethics + Emerging Sciences Group at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. His research focuses on the potential for emerging technologies to enable or encumber meaningful human lives — especially artificial intelligence and robotics, and especially in the domains of security and national defense.

Dr. Katherine Duthie is a certified healthcare ethics consultant (HEC-C) in Alberta, Canada, and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre at the University of Alberta. In addition to her clinical work, Katherine has been the Ethics Expert for the Health Ethics Research Boards of Alberta’s Cancer Committee for the past 6 years.

Matt Smith is a seasoned law enforcement manager with more than three decades of public service and has served as a sworn police officer since 1997. Matt is currently a Lieutenant with a Southern California police department, where he provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and organizational guidance.

Chris Klug is an experienced law enforcement leader with more than two decades of service in one of the largest Sheriff’s Offices in the State of Colorado, where he has built a career around ethical decision‑making, instructional excellence, and organizational leadership. He has served in multiple command and supervisory roles, providing guidance on professional standards, policy compliance, investigative oversight, and critical decision processes.

Mikhail Delport is CTO at Compass. With over a decade of experience in IT leadership, he specializes in server operations, network architecture, security management, and enterprise software development across healthcare, higher education, and manufacturing.

Margaux Auzanneau is Director of Operations at Compass. Previously, while working for a defence and security corporation in London, she pioneered and led an ethics initiative to establish guiding principles and develop ethical design criteria and ethical use policies around this emerging technology.

Dr. Luke Gelinas is a Senior Chair Director at Advarra IRB and a Senior Advisor at the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard. In his work on the IRB, Luke provides analysis and guidance on complex ethical issues arising in the course of clinical research study design and human participant protection.

Dr. Johannes Himmelreich is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Administration and International Affairs at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School. He studies the ethics of artificial intelligence, data science, and emerging technologies.

Carissa Véliz is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at the Institute for Ethics in AI, and a Fellow at Hertford College at the University of Oxford. She is the recipient of the 2021 Herbert A. Simon Award for Outstanding Research in Computing and Philosophy.

Michael Skerker is a Professor at the US Naval Academy specializing in professional ethics.

Lorenzo Nericcio is a San Diego-based philosophy and humanities instructor focusing on the intersection of social issues and technology. He has experience in media and digital communications, and his current focuses are environmental ethics, philosophy of technology, and AI ethics.

Dr. Becky Vartabedian is the Director and Lead for Equitable Change Management at Compass. Her work focuses on process improvements that drive equitable outcomes for Compass’ clients, and she is committed to evidence-based and culturally-responsive change practices.

Dr. Drew Richardson is an Associate Professor at George Mason University in the Systems Engineering and Operations Research department. He earned his PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Central Florida. His research interests include exploring data to aid decision-making for industries with voluminous data sets such as government organizations, healthcare providers, and sports teams.

Dr. Teresa Allen is a philosopher specializing in social and political philosophy. Her research concerns how our moral and political obligations shape what we ought to know, and what others can reasonably expect us to be knowledgeable about.

Dr. Jovana Davidovic is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Iowa, where she also holds a secondary appointment at the Law School and the Center for Human Rights. Jovana’s research focuses on ethics of organizations, military ethics, professional ethics, and ethics of algorithms and AI.

Dr. Jeremy Davis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Georgia. He was previously a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Florida, a Visiting Assistant Professor at the US Military Academy (West Point), and earned his PhD from the University of Toronto.

Dr. Patton Dodd is a professional writer and editor with more than twenty years experience in media and publishing. His writing has appeared in a range of international publications, including the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Slate, CNN.com, and The Atlantic.

Dr Linda Eggert is an Interdisciplinary Ethics Fellow at the Center for Ethics at Stanford University and a Technology & Human Rights Fellow with the Harvard Kennedy School. Before joining Stanford, Linda was a Fellow with the Edmond J Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University.

Dr. Thomas Ferretti is a Senior Lecturer in ethics and sustainable business at the University of Greenwich, where he co-leads the Executive MBA programme. After earning his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Louvain and completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Toronto, he worked for several years at the London School of Economics, where he was teaching business ethics and leading research on the ethics of AI applications within organisations.

Dianne Garcia has more than twenty years of experience working in marginalized communities. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master’s of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Nimra Asif completed her PhD at University of Connecticut in the Department of Philosophy and is a research assistant at the UConn Humanities Institute. Her research interests include philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and philosophy of science.

Dr. Duncan Purves is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Florida. Prior to that, he was a faculty fellow at the Center for Bioethics at NYU. He conducts research in bioethics and the ethics of emerging technologies, focusing especially on big data and machine learning applications, including recent work on the ethical use of AI in predictive policing, among other applications.

Dr. Kelly Arenson is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Duquesne University, She taught previously at The University of Memphis and Morehouse College, and received her PhD at Emory University.

Alicia Tahmaseb, project manager and researcher at Compass,  is an M.A. of Philosophy & Economics student, and a tutor of Philosophy of Economics at the University of Bayreuth. She has a great interest in socioeconomic justice, and is particularly focused on unpaid work, responsible use of technology, recognition justice, and ethics of markets.

Dr. Anicée Van Engeland is a UK-based Associate Professor in International Security and Law at Cranfield University. Anicée’s main areas of research and practice are human rights law and humanitarian law with a focus on the Muslim world (and a sub expertise in Iranian affairs).

Kate Vredenburgh is an Assistant Professor in Philosophy at the London School of Economics. Her research focuses on questions in the ethics of AI, organizational ethics, and scientific methodology. She has written on algorithmic fairness, explainable AI, and participatory AI, among other topics, and brings more than four years experience in ethics advising.

Regi Worles (he/they) brings creativity, centered in racial equity, to his work. They have 10 years of community organizing experience, most recently with Colorado Health Foundation. As an organizer working in various communities, Regi saw how systemic barriers people face daily prevent communities, particularly those of color, from living healthy lives.
